An Artist's Tail

Ran across my old ponytail the other day. It became a prop in a silly piece of sketch comedy I've posted on Youtube. Be sure to leave me a comment:

Art In A Nutshell: Would you like to take a class on the subject of Abstract Extractionism? I now teach classes at the Art Pad here in Austin. The class covers everything from the Makapansgat Pebble to a Microsoft Engineer's usage of inkblots in a password encryption program. Learn the skills of Scribblism - the art and practice of the scribble. Along with Scribble Reading one will also leave with a skill for seeing amazing imagery in the meat of the peanut. As the inventor of peanut carving and the Old Man in the Peanut, your peanut sculptures will benefit from instruction from the original, as you carve your own legumes for your peanut gallery! Keeping Austin Nutty since 1993, Ismael Cavazos (the new american carver). Here's the description from Art Pad Studio.Com:

ART IN A NUTSHELL

Instructor, Ismael Cavazos

Can you scribble? Have you ever seen clouds come alive with imagery? Then you possess the hand and eye of an artist! Austin artist, ISMAEL CAVAZOS, will lead this class in an exploration of Abstract Extractionism, the discovery of images in scribbles and the patterns of natural objects like clouds and wood grain. Each day will feature a unique art form; inkblots, scribbles, and even peanuts; taking a look at the history of Abstract Extractionism, and learning techniques to transform these visions into art.

Chance meeting at Bouldin Creek

My path crossed Ron Lyon's & Jenny Paschall's last week while having coffee at Bouldin. A few days later the Old Man in the Peanut was being filmed for a mini-featurette on a new TV series the team is working on entitled Real Strange. I will keep the site updated with an air date as soon as I find out. In the mean time, check out the TV promo:

DOZENS OF DEAD BIRDS SHUTDOWN THE HEART OF AUSTIN

Downtown, Austin - I left the Green Muse Cafe yesterday after offering my first set of Scribble Sessions (I'll post examples soon), around 6:30 - 7pm. I parked on 7th facing East just short of Congress. I distinctly remember turning right, to go South on Congress, and coming to the light at 5th Street where I looked out my open window to the massive amount of birds that were hopping from tree to tree. I looked over to my left at the car beside me, the inhabitants were busy looking up at the trees and the noisy birds . I might not of thought twice about it, except that the news at 5 this morning was saying they were closing Congress down between 6th and 8th Streets because of dead birds - grackles, sparrows and pigeons. This later expanded from Cesar Chavez to 11th Street - around 8 am. Now they've cordoned off the two streets to the left and right of Congress, with several side streets and all buildings in the area blocked off and expected to remain off-limits until about noon, said police spokeswoman Toni Chovanetz. All this on the eve of the state's 80th legislative session - welcome back "representatives".

ABSTRACT EXTRACTIONISM, THE TABBY, AND THE 'M'

These kittens came to me via the back patio just weeks ago. What a gift! I was set to give them away and as the weeks have gone by, that has become more difficult to do. So, how is this photo an example of Abstract Extractionism? THE 'M' OFCOURSE! Many tabbies have a distinct 'M' marking on their forehead. There are several legends about where this came from. One relates that the Virgin Mary bestowed an "M" on a tabby's head after it helped keep the baby Jesus warm. In another legend, the prophet Mohammed bestowed the marking upon his beloved cat's brow after it warned him of danger, and the M remains today to remind us of Mohammed's blessings upon cats.[1] In reality, neither of these figures would have used a Latin 'M': Mary spoke Aramaic and the first letter of her name is the Hebrew letter Mem, and Mohammed's name begins with the Arabic letter Miim. FLASH IN THE SKY OVER AUSTIN

About ten minutes ago, my neighbor and I were outside speaking when a flash in the northwest sky caught our attention. We then witnessed what I can only relate to a firework, complete with green and blue color changes in the trail line as it descended, accented by large sharp sparks emmitting from the bright white head. Maybe two minutes after its disappearance a report was heard - a low, but sure thud that we both acknowledged. Then Gina drives up and says she saw the flash on the way over and attributed it to lightning. Wow.

NEW WEBSITE : EYEING IT . COM

Stone Face Photo

The simplest form of Extraction is pointing it out (using your finger or camera). The second simplest form is putting an eye on it. That is to say, the Extraction is achieved by the use of a mark, in some way, to elude to an EYE. At Eyeing It . Com, the eyes are achieved using Squiggly Eyes!!! Then photographed to document.. (Here's what a friend wrote: Ismael Cavazos (http://www.ismaelcavazos.com/) was a really great artist who does a lot of work with GOOOOOOGLY EYES sticking them on things in public spaces. He gave me a set of magnetic ones and I loved them waaaaaay too much in fact I couldn't stop playing with them.) Read More

Fresh Cup closed it's doors in May. Which is unfortunate because The Cup had agreed to keep my photography as the look of the coffee shop. Oh well, one can still visit The Stash on south First St. to check out a dozen of my photos.

I recently added Abstract Extractionism to the list of External Links for the word Pareidolia. I'd like to add the word Abstract Extractionism itself but it looks like I need to publish the idea first (more than internet publishing). I found it troubling that Wikipedia has added a new word: Religious Pareidolia, which is how the word pareidolia itself got its start. The nature of Wikipedia and the ability to add-as-you-go has allowed the word to morph and slowly become the meta label that has been missing - the fracturing of the word into "religious pareidolia" proves this. As these words still lack in helping to describe my art, Abstract Extractionism still has a chance.

Please help by posting a link to: Abstract Extractionism. Also writing about it in your blogs will help. Thanks.

In the first part of July I am featuring a special item on Ebay. Get ready - it will be on this level: but not religious!
